Female genital mutilation
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is dangerous and a criminal offence in the UK. FGM is where a female’s genitals are deliberately altered or removed for non-medical reasons. It is also known as ‘female circumcision’ or ‘cutting’.
FGM can happen at different times in a girl or women’s life and can span from the individual being a newborn to it happening during pregnancy. It is used to control female sexuality and can cause long lasting damage to their physical and emotional health.
