About the board

The Board is made up of strategic leaders from different agencies. We set the strategic direction for multi-agency safeguarding. The agencies represented on the board are:

  • Barnado’s
  • Cardiff and Vale Local Authorities
  • Cardiff and Vale University/ Swansea Bay University Health Boards
  • Care Forum Wales
  • His Majesty’s Prison Service Cardiff
  • Home Office
  • Llamau
  • National Probation Service
  • NSPCC
  • South Wales Fire and Rescue Service
  • South Wales Police
  • Velindre, NHS Trust
  • Welsh Ambulance Service, NHS Trust

The Board carries out these day-to-day functions, through:

  • Policy direction
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of safeguarding within agencies
  • Commissioning practice reviews
  • Sharing learning to practitioners to make sure that safeguarding is a priority

The board has governance of smaller groups that carry out the core functions.

The core functions include:

  • Developing, implementing and monitoring procedures that help protect people and prevent abuse
  • Raising awareness of the board’s work
  • Make sure the measures taken by agencies are effective
  • Make and monitor recommendations
  • Carry out practice reviews, assessments and audits to share learning and improve practice
  • Reviewing the performance of the board and its partners
  • Facilitating research on protection and prevention of abuse and neglect
  • Identifying and reviewing the training needs of practitioners
