Coercive control

Coercive control is the continuous patterns of behaviour that are intended to exert power or control over a survivor/victim. This behaviour can deprive them of their independent and make them feel isolated and scared. Controlling behaviours can include:

  • Controlling what an individual eats, wears or does
  • Isolating an individual from their family or friends
  • Tracking your movements or monitoring your behaviour
  • Gaslighting
  • Controlling who you are allowed to see or spend time with
  • Causing you to feel humiliated, degraded or put down
